Chief Sustainability Officer
Michael Torrance is Chief Sustainability Officer of BMO Financial Group and is passionate about sustainability, especially as it pertains to corporate governance and finance. As Chief Sustainability Officer, Michael leads strategy and implementation of sustainability governance, disclosure, engagement and innovation at BMO Financial Group. Before joining BMO, Michael was a Partner at an international law firm where he spearheaded the development of a global environmental, social and sustainability governance risk advisory practice. His experience includes application of international standards of environmental and social risk management and human rights due diligence in the corporate and banking contexts. Michael has authored widely used texts and guides on international environmental and social governance frameworks including the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability. Through the podcast, Michael is keen to raise awareness of the incredible work being done around sustainability in the banking and finance industries. Michael is fortunate to engage regularly with leading thinkers in this space and wishes to share that opportunity with the broader community. Michael is a proud father of two and in his spare time enjoys the outdoors, running, swimming, biking and travelling.
Head of Sustainable Finance Advisory, BMO Capital Markets
Manju is the Head of Sustainable Finance, leading efforts with corporate and institutional clients to incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into their investment considerations. She also spearheads broader Enterprise wide strategy and thought leadership around sustainable finance and ESG investment considerations. She heads efforts at BMO for identifying impactful solutions around green/social bond underwriting, product development and other sustainable financing activities. She is BMO Capital Markets lead for ESG matters and advisory. She is a member of BMO Sustainability Council. Manju is eager to bring leading developments and dialogues from the innovative world of sustainable finance and SRI. She is excited to engage with leading experts who are advancing a global sustainability agenda for the financial markets for social and environmental good, including achieving UN’s 17 SDGs and investing in a better future.
Manju has over 20 years of professional experience including in institutional asset management and investment banking with an emphasis in structured finance, risk management and quantitative methods. She has also provided transformative leadership, effective advisory, and corporate governance for nonprofits/social enterprises focused on social/environmental impact. Her unique combination of buy-side and sell-side experience along with demonstrated leadership in ESG matters brings distinctive and valuable perspective to listeners. A polymath, she has master’s degrees in business administration, mathematics and ethnomusicology.
Vice President, Analyst, Responsible Investment
David joined BMO Global Asset Management in 2017. Prior to joining BMO, David held senior research positions at the governance research agencies PIRC and ISS, after which he joined the ESG team at Fidelity International. David has extensive experience within a European coverage on researching governance topics, engaging with companies at a board/senior management level and dialoguing with policy makers. As an ESG Manager at Fidelity he expanded his expertise from pure governance to broader ESG topics, with a particular responsibility for integrating ESG themes into their investment research and decision-making processes. David graduated in 2006 from Sussex University with a BA in Philosophy, after which he completed an MSc in Philosophy and Public Policy at the London School of Economics with a thesis topic focusing on shareholder activism.
